Accurate information is essential in our timely response to any vaccine-preventable disease such as Pertussis (whooping cough), Chickenpox or Measles. BVSD is committed to ensuring accurate immunization data about our students and schools is available to parents and our health partners.

What does this mean for my child?

With proper management, most concussions resolve quickly. However, without a plan for supporting recovery in school, concussions can last longer and interfere with classwork, physical activities, and social life.

If your child has experienced any head injury, let your school know - we know what to do to help.

What should I do if my child has COVID or COVID-like symptoms?

BVSD is following the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment's guidance for COVID-19 and other communicable diseases.

Can my child take medications at school?

In BVSD, school nurse consultants and health room paraprofessionals work together to manage student's health-related needs and concerns.

Respiratory illnesses are on the rise, flu, COVID, RSV and other illnesses can spread quickly through families and classrooms.

What you can do to keep your family healthy ~

Is my child too sick for school?

Sometimes it's hard to know when to keep them home. BVSD follows the State's Guidelines for Illness in Schools and Child Care settings.

Health Resources

Immunizations

Colorado law (Board of Health rule 6 CCR 1009-2) requires all students attending Colorado schools and licensed child cares to be vaccinated against certain diseases unless an exemption is filed.

Under Colorado law, a student may be exempted from required immunizations if they have submitted a signed medical or non-medical exemption certificate.

Students must submit documentation of immunization or exemption

BVSD follows Colorado law requiring all students attending Colorado schools and licensed child cares to be vaccinated against certain vaccine-preventable diseases unless an exemption is filed with the school. K-12 students who are not in compliance with immunization requirements will be excluded from school after November 3, 2024 until their status is compliant.

Non-medical exemption requirements

All non-medical exemptions are required by Senate Bill 20-163 to be submitted on the State's Exemption Certification document. Non-medical exemptions will only be accepted in this manner. Please see CDPHE's Vaccine Exemption page for additional information on the new requirement and how to complete it.

You can check your child's immunization compliance status now in the IC Parent Portal under Health.

Discuss your child’s vaccination needs with your health care provider or local public health agency if you have questions.

Resources

Student Health Forms

Health Conditions Students with Asthma, Seizures, Diabetes, Chronic Headaches, or who experience Anaphylaxis benefit from the use of a standardized health care plan. We encourage the use of these standardized plans and orders:

Students may receive medications at school according to BVSD policy. However, all prescription and non-prescription medications must be maintained in the health office and administered by a trained staff member. All medications must be delivered to the health office and be accompanied by a completed authorization form signed by a health care provider.

EXCEPTION: A student who requires the use of emergency rescue medications may be allowed to self-carry. Your health care provider can give permission for your student to self-carry on the medication authorization form.

Athletic Preparticipation Physical Evaluations

Students participating in athletics are required to have a preparticipation physical evaluation every 365 days. Use of the Colorado High School Activities Association Preparticipation Physical Evaluation form is strongly recommended.

Nutrition and Allergen Information

If your student has food allergies, celiac disease or requires nutritional information for a health condition please notify your school nurse so they can ensure your student is safe during the school day.

For additional guidance on food and other allergy considerations in the school setting, you can refer to the BVSD Allergy Handbook.

For details on nutrition and allergen information on food and meals provided by BVSD, see the School Food Project's Nutrition and Allergens website.

Screening & Preventative Care

Vision and Hearing Screening

In accordance with state guidelines, students are screened at selected grade levels and by teacher referral for vision and hearing. Appropriate referrals are then made to the parent/guardian.

Vision and hearing screenings are conducted in the schools in the fall for the following grades: PreK, K, 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 9 and all students new to the district.

Dental Screenings

Dental care in early childhood is essential to promote familiarity with professional dental services, prevent dental decay and connect children and parents to regular dental resources in their community. Clinica Family Health and Boulder Valley School District have partnered to provide low to no cost school-based dental screenings, sealants, fluoride treatments, education, and case management services to prevent and treat dental cavities. The program is currently in a pilot phase and is not in every elementary school yet. We are planning for expansion in the coming years.

In addition to the school-based dental program, financial support is available to assist with the cost of dental services for students who are eligible. For additional information contact the School Medicaid Program office at: 720.561.5571

Physicals

BVSD recommends that all students follow the American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines to maintain optimal health, including physicals and screenings; and that all those new to the area receive a physical examination and establish care with a local healthcare provider.

Medicaid School Health Program

The Medicaid School Health Program supports the Boulder Valley School District (BVSD) by funding health services provided to students enrolled in Health First Colorado (Colorado’s Medicaid Program). Services provided include nursing, behavioral health, orientation and mobility, speech, language, hearing, vision, occupational therapy, physical therapy, care management and specialized transportation.

The funding received enables BVSD to deliver health services to all students in the district based upon priorities determined through a community needs assessment and Local Services Plan. The BVSD 2024-2029 Local Services Plan includes the following goals:

  1. Increase mental health services and supports for students
  2. Increase access to healthcare services for students with medical needs and disabilities.
  3. Improve the health, wellness, and safety of students and staff in the district.
  4. Assist BVSD families to find and access community resources including outreach for health insurance.
